Carrie L. Brookins

Carrie L. Acklin Brookins went home to glory June 9, 2018, with her family at her side after a valiant battle with a long illness.

Carrie was born August 9, 1924 in Decherd, Tennessee to the late Mark Acklin Sr. and Maggie Douglas Acklin. She was the eighth of 13 children. She was preceded in death by her husband James P. Brookins and all 12 siblings.

She accepted Christ into her life at an early age and her faith sustained her throughout her 93 years. She was a former member of Central Baptist Church, Canaan Christian Church, and was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church until her death.

Carrie married the love of her life Sgt. James Brookins and moved to Fort Knox. As a military family they lived in many places, including Ansbach Germany before returning to Louisville, KY. She often reminisced of her travels and shared many stories. She lived on Muhammad Ali Blvd. for more than 30 years. In her final years she resided with her daughter Connie and her husband Jesse West.

Carrie was a hard worker and as a child she worked on the family farm. As an adult she found her niche as a beautician. She worked at several shops in Louisville, including many years at Lady Gricene Beauty until she retired.

Carrie always greeted everyone with a warm and friendly smile. She enjoyed cooking and hosting family dinners. Carrie was famous for her sweet potatoes, dinner rolls, pound cakes, fruit cakes and caramel cakes.

Carrie will be sorely missed. She was a devoted mother to her children and is survived by Connie (Jesse) West, Dr. James (Janice) Kennerly, Gayle (Roger) Williams, and William (Sunada) Brookins, 8 grandchildren (Joseph Lawson, Kelly Ridgeway, Angela West, David Kennerly, Cara Ford, Jacy Britt, Tracy Brown, and Whitney Lampkin). As well as 7 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Visitation: 9:30am-10:30am Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 4033 Vermont Ave. with the funeral service to follow at 10:30,burial in Highland Memory Gardens.
